Outdoor Event - Thousands expected to 'Classic at Odeonsplatz' in Munich

Thousands of spectators are expected again at this weekend's Open-Air spectacle "Classik am Odeonsplatz" in Munich's city center. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by its chief conductor Simon Rattle, plays excerpts from Richard Wagner's "Walküre" and Johannes Brahms today (8 p.m.). Soprano Anja Kampe and baritone Michael Volle are among the soloists.

On Saturday, the Munich Philharmonics, with their future chief conductor Lahav Shani, are on the program. They present, among other things, film music by John Williams together with star violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

"I'm drawn to the Odeonsplatz because we have a wonderful new chief with the Philharmonics, and it's almost like his debut concert. Plus, open-air events have broken through this traditional concert audience time and time again. There's a very mixed crowd," said the 61-year-old German Press Agency quote from Anne-Sophie Mutter.

"I love an audience that isn't shy about applauding at the wrong time – after a sentence, for example – and that isn't afraid to make room for their joy and give a voice, because I know how much that pleases the artists," Mutter added. "The audience is in a very positive festive mood. I appreciate this cheerful openness."

It's important to break down apprehensions about classical Music, emphasized the violinist: "I believe the difficulty classical music faces more and more lies in our lack of familiarity with it. It's simply foreign to most of us. Classical music doesn't exist for many."

8000 people can attend "Classik am Odeonsplatz" per evening. In recent years, the event, which has taken place every July weekend since the year 2000, has always been sold out.
