Toward the conclusion of 2023, there was a slight increase in the number of individuals employed at German universities compared to the previous year.

There experienced a decrease in the quantity of teaching personnel at higher learning establishments.

The count of academic staff in the scientific field at German universities took a dip. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the tally stood at around 425,800 individuals by December 2023, marking a decrease of 2,700 or 0.6% compared to the 428,500 from the previous year, 2022.

A significant portion of this scientific staff, about 34%, worked part-time, comprising adjunct professors, lecturers, and scientific assistants. Conversely, the remaining 66% were full-time employees, which included approximately 51,900 professors and around 214,900 individuals in the scientific and artistic sectors.

Breaking down the full-time workers in the scientific sector, roughly two-thirds, totaling 186,100, were on temporary contracts. In contrast, only one-third, numbering 95,500, secured permanent positions.

Turning to the overall statistics, the Federal Statistical Office reported a workforce of approximately 792,300 individuals employed at universities and university hospitals by December 2023. This was a marginal increase of 0.6% or 4,800 when compared to the previous year's end. However, the growth in employment was largely restricted to the non-scientific areas of administrative services, libraries, technical support, and nursing. By year-end 2023, there were around 366,600 individuals employed in these areas, marking a 2.1% rise compared to the previous year.**

The decrease in the count of academic staff in the scientific field at German universities was only 0.6%, amounting to 2,700 individuals. Yet, when considering the full-time workforce in this sector, only one-third held permanent positions, representing a mere 0.6% of the total percentage of full-time employees.
