Antisemitism - The Uni-Rector is alarmed by antisemitic graffiti
A day after the discovery of antisemitic graffiti in a lecture hall and seminar rooms at the University of Duesseldorf, the rector, Anja Steinbeck, expressed her shock and disgust. "I am speechless and appalled by the antisemitic graffiti that appeared at our university yesterday. In the name of the entire university, I condemn this hateful crime," Steinbeck stated in a press release.
The Heinrich Heine University reportedly contacted the police and filed a complaint immediately after the discovery of the graffiti in the building complex where the Philosophical Faculty is located.
Steinbeck urged all members of the university to remain vigilant and report any antisemitic incidents to the university administration. "Our publicly accessible campus is very large and comprises several thousand rooms. We will take immediate action against anyone who misuses the HHU campus to spread antisemitic hatred and harassment." The university will limit access to rooms outside the regular academic schedule.
Rudiger Mahlo, the European representative of the Jewish Claims Conference, which advocates for the rights of Holocaust survivors, expressed his shock. "The antisemitic graffiti in the seminar rooms of the Heinrich Heine University in Duesseldorf is an expression of eliminationist antisemitism. It calls for a new Shoah," Mahlo stated in a press release. The university must take all necessary steps to become a safe place for Jewish students and faculty once again.
