Humanitarian help for Ukraine - The UN Refugee Commissioner announces new aid in Ukraine

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, announced a new aid package of $100 million (around 93 million Euro) during a visit to Ukraine. The UNHCR will use this support to prepare for winter and continue assisting the Ukrainian government in Kiev to help those displaced or otherwise affected by the conflict, Grandi said during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kiev. The organization also plans to mobilize future resources to support the country.

Zelenskyy thanked Grandi for the aid, which is urgently needed due to the damage to the energy infrastructure caused by Russian attacks. According to a statement from the Presidential Office, the country still needs more help to rebuild destroyed houses and install bomb shelters in schools and hospitals. This will provide safety for the displaced Ukrainians to return home.

Grandi has visited Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian armed conflict on February 24, 2022, for the fifth time. He also visited the children's hospital in Kiev hit by a rocket attack, as he announced on social media X. "No place should be better protected than a children's hospital. Yet it was hit on July 8 by a rocket," he said.

According to UNHCR data, there are approximately 9.7 million displaced persons in Ukraine due to the Russian invasion. Most of them, around 6 million, are abroad. Many people have fled from the particularly contested eastern and southern Ukraine, where Russian troops have occupied large parts of the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. In some cities, entire towns are completely destroyed.

  1. The Assistance Organization, specifically the UNHCR, has been providing Humanitarian aid to the displaced refugees in Ukraine since the start of the conflict.
  2. Filippo Grandi, the head of the Humanitarian aid organization, expressed his gratitude to the United Nations for the USD 100 million aid package toward Ukraine's refugees.
  3. The UNHCR plans to distribute the aid funds to prepare for the winter and continue supporting the Ukrainian government in Kiev, as called for by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
  4. The International Community, including the US Dollar, has contributed to the aid package, recognizing the urgency to provide essential resources for the displaced persons in Ukraine.
  5. The United Nations Refugee Agency aims to mobilize additional resources to support Ukraine, as the ongoing War and Conflicts have forced millions to leave their homes.
  6. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of international Help packages to ensure the safe return of displaced Ukrainians to their homes, focusing on rebuilding damaged infrastructure and installing bomb shelters in essential facilities.
  7. Grandi, in his fifth visit to Ukraine since the Russian armed conflict, also called for the protection of vulnerable populations, including children, during times of War and Conflict.
