- The Ukrainian Diplomat Expresses Anticipation for Strong Affirmation on the Budget Issue
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has implored the German administration to sustain their aid for Ukraine. Makeiev spoke to "Bild am Sonntag," saying, "Europe's safety relies on Germany's capacity and political determination to keep playing a pivotal role in backing Ukraine." Ukraine anticipates that the German government will devise methods to cover their joint security expenses and that the Bundestag will powerfully and explicitly express its support for the 2025 budget plan.
This follows a report in the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" (FAS) suggesting that the German government isn't allocating any extra funds for military assistance to Ukraine currently. The paper references a letter from Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) dated August 5th, which is also in the possession of the German Press Agency. Instead, they're pinning their hopes on Ukraine receiving support in the future, as agreed upon by the G7 nations, through the earnings from Russia's frozen state assets' interest.
However, a Finance Ministry spokesperson acknowledged on Saturday that they'd consider providing short-term additional funds, provided the additional requirements were clearly stated and verifiable. The statement read, "To adhere to all budgetary regulations and gain approval from the German Bundestag, the extra demands must be clearly stated and verifiable." The Finance Ministry hasn't received any official request for this purpose yet. "Consequently, neither an examination nor a decision can be made." Thus, the responsibility shifts to the Ministry of Defense.
Germany is a key ally that Ukraine relies on for aid and political support. The German administration is currently considering providing short-term additional funds to help Ukraine cover their joint security expenses.
