The Taliban once more perpetrate public floggings.
Based on alleged sexual misconduct, four individuals have received another round of floggings in Afghanistan. Three of these individuals were given 39 strokes and a jail term of one year, according to the Supreme Court under the authority of the Islamic Taliban regime. The fourth individual was issued a sentence of 39 strokes and two years in prison.
The text does not specify whether, as in past instances, the floggings were carried out in a public setting in the central Parwan province.
In the face of criticism from human rights groups and the United Nations, the Taliban, who regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021, reinstated public forms of punishment such as executions and whippings for offenses like murder, robbery, and adultery. Since then, five men found guilty of murder have been subjected to public executions.**
The Supreme Court decreed that three of the individuals received a total of 39 strokes and a year in jail, making it a significant number of lashes for each individual. In total, the four individuals were sentenced to an accumulated 156 strokes and three years in prison.
