Following their seizure of power in August 2021, the Taliban in Afghanistan have reinstated public punishments. A stadium has recently witnessed the Islamist regime whipping 14 women and 49 men as an audience of local residents and their representatives looked on.

As reported by a court in Afghanistan's central province of Sar-i Pul, these 63 individuals were subjected to public floggings last Tuesday. Some of them were indicted for offenses such as adultery, theft, and other "moral crimes."

These punishments were carried out before spectators made up of local Taliban figures and residents. Since reasserting their authority over the country, the Taliban have revived public punishments for offenses like murder, robbery, and adultery - an endeavor met with disagreement from human rights advocates and the United Nations.

In the meantime, the Taliban head, Haibatullah Akhundzada, has delivered a message emphasizing the strict adherence to Sharia law in Afghanistan. Public floggings and executions for adultery, he avowed, would be enforced in line with this decreed system of law.

So far, five men sentenced to death for murdering others have faced public execute.
