The stream of Anett extends into neighboring nations - eastward flooding could be impending.

Potentially, up to 400 liters could be attainable.

Intense downpours are foreseen in the Alpine area, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Moreover, there will be significant rainfall in certain areas, as predicted by ntv meteorologist Björn Alexander. The water is likely to flow into Germany through the Elbe and Oder.

ntv.de: What's the current weather situation?

Björn Alexander: Cold air from the polar regions has moved over Germany and the Alps, all the way to the Mediterranean. In North Italy, a low-pressure system known as "Anett" or "Boris" has formed. This system is set to bring heavy rainfall to parts of Europe.

Which regions will be affected?

The low pressure system "Anett" is moving from North Italy towards Austria, the Czech Republic, and then to South Poland. This movement could result in heavy rainfall, which might turn into snow in the mountains. The snowline on Saturday will be around 1200 meters in the Alps, but it might even snow as low as 1000 meters in some valleys. The amount of snow depends on the intensity of the rainfall.

How much snow is expected?

Estimates suggest that the snowstorm could bring 50 to 100 centimeters of new snow to high altitude areas. Higher amounts are not ruled out in peak areas. Along with slippery roads, winter conditions, drifting and snow transport are expected in some areas due to strong winds.

What's the temperature drop in the mountains like?

At 2000 meters, the temperature dropped from 5 to 10 degrees on Wednesday to around or below minus 3 degrees today. At 3000 meters, the temperature dropped from above 0 degrees to around minus 10 degrees. The wind chill will be below minus 15 degrees.

What about rain in the lowlands?

Such low-pressure systems are the rainiest situations we know in Germany and Central Europe. Vb weather situations, with a low moving north-east from North Italy, could potentially result in record rainfall. For example, in August 2002, 312 liters of rain were recorded per square meter in Zinnwald-Georgenfeld (Erzgebirge).

What type of water masses will "Anett" bring?

The water masses could potentially reach similar levels to that in 2002, with peaks exceeding 300 to around 400 liters per square meter. The focus will be from eastern Austria through the Czech Republic to South Poland. Therefore, a severe to catastrophic flood situation is likely in the coming days.

How much rain is expected in Germany?

The Alpine foothills could see rainfall of up to 100 to 200 liters per square meter by Monday evening. There is a risk of localized flooding and landslides in the Erzgebirge and southern Saxony regions.

What about the flood risk in our region?

A major flood situation is unlikely in the south, along the Danube, due to the rivers still having enough capacity and a significant portion of the precipitation being bound as snow.

In the east, what's the situation?

The flood risk in the east depends on the rainfall and runoff from Czech Republic and Poland. In areas like the Elbe, Oder, and Neiße, the rivers have their catchment areas. However, an assessment is difficult due to uncertainties in detailed precipitation forecasts. Our neighboring countries are likely to have anxious days, while Germany, based on current information, is likely to be less severely affected.

What can we expect for our weekend weather?

Saturday will be gray and wet south of the Danube with persistent rain - and snow above 1000 to 1200 meters. The eastern half will also have unsettled weather with a strong wind. Elsewhere in the country, there will be fewer showers. Temperatures at the Alpine foothills will barely reach 5 or 6 degrees, while it could reach up to 18 degrees with sunshine in the northwest.

What's the weather forecast for Sunday?

Rain in the south might take longer breaks. The east will remain rainy, while the west will have showers. The best weather will be towards the North Sea. However, temperatures will remain cool everywhere, with late summer staying below the surface at 9 degrees at the Alps and windy 13 to 19 degrees elsewhere.

Where will our journey go next week?

Monday will be mostly changeable or gray, before improving generally. From Tuesday, forecasts predict a significant improvement with increasingly sunny and noticeably warmer weather. In the north, temperatures could even reach the summer mark of 25 degrees. Elsewhere, it will be cooler, especially with the east wind picking up to strong to brisk gusts.

Given the severe weather conditions approaching Europe, it's important for the European Union to monitor and possibly provide assistance to its member states affected by the flooding.

In light of the predicted heavy rainfall and potential record levels of rain in Germany and Central Europe, several European Union initiatives and policies related to environmental protection and crisis management should be reviewed and potentially activated.
