The quest for the lost German individual was halted by an avalanche.

The hunt for a buried German trekker in Tyrol is expected to continue on Tuesday. On Monday, it was considered too hazardous due to heavy avalanche threat and adverse weather conditions, as per the Austrian authorities.

The 70-year-old gentleman was part of a gang of approximately 30 German hikers in the Karwendel mountains close to the Bavarian boundary. He got caught in an avalanche while making his way down from an alpine meadow on Saturday. A joint rescue operation involving German and Austrian rescue teams saw an Austrian mountain rescuer being partly buried and hurt by another avalanche.

The operation was put on hold on Sunday due to critical avalanche warnings. If the weather suddenly improves on Monday, mountain rescuers might resume the search at short notice, a police representative shared.

The Austrian Alpine Organization had suggested avoiding mountain expeditions over the weekend due to the arrival of winter in the Alps. The Tyrolean avalanche warning service had warned about the risk of unstable new snow.

Despite the ongoing avalanche warnings, the mountain rescuers are preparing to resume the avalanche search for the missing trekker on Monday, if weather conditions permit. If successful, the avalanche search could potentially uncover any signs of the trekker caught in the Saturday avalanche.
