The price level of electric drives and combustion engines is gradually aligning
On the German market for new cars, the prices for comparable models with electric drive or gasoline engines are gradually approaching each other. The significant price difference is decreasing, as the private Car Institute found in its regular discount study for July.
Based on transaction prices, which are the actual amounts customers pay for a new car after deducting all discounts from the list price, the prices of the 15 most popular electric cars have decreased by 4% since April, while those of the gasoline-powered cars have increased by 5%.
The price differences are still substantial, says study leader Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer. For instance, a VW Golf with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, with a calculated transaction price of 23,443 Euro, costs 9,220 Euro less than its electric counterpart, the ID3. The difference for the Opel Corsa is even greater, at over 13,600 Euro in favor of the battery model.
Despite the declining price difference between electric drive and combustion engine models, a discount study reveled a 4% decrease in prices for popular electric cars since April, contrasting the 5% increase in gasoline-powered vehicles. The price level for electric drive vehicles, however, still lags behind that of combustion engines, as exemplified by the significant discount needed for the VW ID3, which costs 9,220 Euro less than its gasoline-driven Golf counterpart.
