- The Predicament of the Bayesian: Previously Trusted Captain Under Investigation
After the unfortunate sinking of the extravagant yacht "Bayesian" off Sicily's coast, killing seven individuals, Italy's prosecutor's office has initiated an investigation against the boat's captain, as per various news sources. As reported by ANSA and "La Repubblica", the captain is being scrutinized for potential charges of manslaughter and shipwreck. He was allegedly grilled for the second time within a week on Sunday.
The investigation seems to revolve around whether certain doors and hatches were open during the event and when the alarm was triggered. It is suspected that a hatch situated at the stern of the ship, utilized for boarding watercraft such as jet skis, played a role. Moreover, there was a door leading from this garage-like area to the engine room. As per "Süddeutsche Zeitung", witnesses stated that the ship sank stern-first, which could imply that water may have entered the engine room through the open hatch, thereby causing the sinking.
Additionally, media reports suggest that the ship's keel was not fully submerged. Although this allows for sailing in shallow waters and harbors, it is inessential while anchoring several hundred meters offshore. With the keel up, the ship's center of gravity is elevated, lowering its stability against the powerful wind striking the towering mast.
Captain Under the Microscope
The captain holds the primary responsibility for the security of passengers, crew, and the vessel itself. Following his latest inquiry, he was added to the roster of suspects. Other crew members are also being interrogated, and it cannot be ruled out that some may eventually face charges.
The tragic incident off the Italian coast last Monday resulted in the demise of British billionaire Mike Lynch, 59, along with his 18-year-old daughter, as well as two couples and the yacht's cook. However, 15 individuals were successfully rescued. The software entrepreneur had planned this sailing adventure with family, friends, and business associates to celebrate his courtroom acquittal.
Storm Seas near Sicily
According to the investigation, the "Bayesian" was struck by a monstrous wave at around 4:00 AM during a storm, featuring winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. The ship sunk within minutes. It is thought that the unfortunate victims were taken by surprise in their cabins and couldn't escape the rushing water in time.
The investigation also focuses on the state of the other doors and hatches on the yacht, as they could have potentially affected the vessel's stability during the storm. Despite the captain being a primary suspect, other crew members are also being questioned, implying a wider probe into the incident.
