The Police Union considers extensive border controls after the EM unfeasible
The Police Union (GdP) considers comprehensive border controls to be unfeasible for an extended period of time. The Federal Police do not have the personnel, equipment, or sufficient resources to permanently control all German borders after the UEFA European Championship, according to the union's chairman, Andreas Roßkopf, in a preview report by Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland on Saturday. A shortage of 500 million Euro existed this year alone. There are also no mobile control stations available.
Christian Dürr, the leader of the FDP parliamentary faction, had previously called for the continuation of border controls to combat illegal migration. According to the CDU/CSU parliamentary spokesman, Alexander Throm, during the EM, approximately 150 smugglers were arrested and entry was denied to around 3200 individuals. "These figures clearly demonstrate the value of border controls."
After the EM, there will be temporary border controls at the borders with Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, and Poland. These measures will be a significant effort for the Federal Police, according to union representative Roßkopf.
The FDP-Faction Leader, Christian Dürr, advocates for the continuation of border controls to curb illegal migration, contradicting the GdP's view that comprehensive controls are impractical. Despite the Federal Police Union's concerns about lack of personnel, equipment, and resources for prolonged border controls, the EM's aftermath will necessitate temporary checks at borders with Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, and Poland.
