- The person you arrested is not an RAF terrorist.
The man provisionally detained at Berlin-Spandau station is not the wanted ex-RAF terrorist. "Investigations have shown that he is not a wanted person," a spokesperson for the Verden public prosecutor's office told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The man's release has been ordered.
Earlier, a man was provisionally detained in connection with the search for two former RAF terrorists. According to a report by "Bild", the informant recognized the man, who was sitting in an ICE, as Ernst-Volker Staub. The LKA spokesperson merely stated that the detention was in connection with the wanted Burkhard Garweg (55) and Ernst-Volker Staub (69).
The Federal Police Directorate in Berlin stated that a man was provisionally detained during a person control on Tuesday around 21:00. He is currently in custody in Berlin, as a spokesperson stated.
First RAF terrorist arrested in February
Since 2015, the Verden public prosecutor's office has been investigating former RAF terrorists Staub, Daniela Klette, and Garweg for attempted murder and attempted and completed severe robbery in several cases. Klette was arrested at the end of February in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The police, led by the LKA Lower Saxony, had been searching for her for decades.
The search for Staub and Garweg continues. They belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist Red Army Faction (RAF). In 1998, the RAF, which had killed more than 30 people, declared itself dissolved.
Following the arrest of Daniela Klette in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the search for Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, former RAF terrorists, continues. The LKA spokesperson mentioned that the man provisionally detained was connected to their cases.
Despite the Federal Police Directorate detaining an individual in Berlin, investigations have revealed that he is not Burkhard Garweg or Ernst-Volker Staub, as previously suspected.
