The number of Bafög recipients increases for the second year in a row

The number of BAföG recipients increased slightly again last year. 635,600 people received benefits under the Federal Training Assistance Act. This was an increase of 0.9 percent from the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. This was the second consecutive increase, following a yearly decrease from 2012 to 2021.

Recipients received an average funding amount of 640 euros per month, an increase of eight percent from 2022. Total expenditures for BAföG benefits increased by 14 percent to 3.4 billion euros due to higher need levels.

A maximum funding amount - full funding - was provided to 348,400 people, or 55 percent of recipients. The number of fully funded students (245,300) remained almost unchanged, while the number of fully funded students (103,200) decreased by four percent. The partial funding for this group also decreased, by six percent to 31,000 people.

On the other hand, the number of partially funded students increased by five percent to 256,200. "Partial funding is provided to individuals whose own income or the income of their parents exceeds certain limits," explained the statisticians.

Last year, 2.9 billion euros were provided for the funding of students, an increase of 17 percent. 526 million euros went to students, an increase of 0.9 percent. Students received an average monthly funding amount of 663 euros (+52 euros). For students, the average monthly funding amount was 537 euros (+20 euros).

The increase in partially funded students prompted a six percent decrease in partial funding, as mentioned earlier. Following this trend, full funding was provided to a higher percentage of recipients compared to the previous year.
