The number of asylum applications in Germany decreases overall
The number of asylum applications filed in Germany in July increased compared to the previous month. However, there was a decrease compared to the same period last year. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf), a total of 18,503 people filed asylum applications nationwide in July. In June, the office received 16,773 asylum applications. In July 2023, more than 23,000 people sought protection in Germany.
From the beginning of January to the end of July this year, around 140,000 foreigners filed asylum applications in Germany for the first time, which is approximately 19.7% less than in the same period last year.
"The current figures show that our measures to limit irregular migration are working," said Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser. "We have brought new clarity to migration policy," she added, also referring to the increased number of deportations. Germany protects people from war and terror. However, those who do not need protection must leave Germany again.
With the internal border controls she ordered, Faeser said the routes of human traffickers are being disrupted. At the same time, it is important to implement the agreed reform of the Common European Asylum System as quickly as possible. The key to long-term control of irregular migration lies in effective controls at the EU's external borders and a fair distribution of those seeking protection in Europe.
In the first half of 2023, asylum applications in Germany decreased significantly within the same period from the previous year. In the European Union, discussions are underway to improve the Common European Asylum System for more effective control of irregular migration.
