The mother of the suspected perpetrator in the Apalachee High School shooting pens an open apology to the families affected.
"To those whose loved ones were impacted by the devastating occurrence at Apalachee High School, I send my deepest apologies from the depths of my soul," penned Marcee Gray, mom to Colt Gray, initially sharing the letter with CNN.
The unfortunate tragedy occurred a week prior, with authorities alleging that it was orchestrated by Colt, leading to the loss of two teachers and two 14-year-olds, Mason and Christian, at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. Seven individuals were hurt by gunshots, while two others sustained different injuries, according to the authorities.
"If it were within my power, I'd gladly exchange places with Mason and Christian," Marcee Gray wrote, expressing sympathy for their families, before adding, "My heart aches for the two educators who sacrificed their lives to ensure the safety and education of our children."
The community is currently living through a horrifying nightmare, and Marcee Gray admitted that she will forever carry the guilt of what transpired. "My son Colt is not a monster. He's my eldest child. He's reserved, thoughtful, caring, hilarious, and exceptionally intelligent. Please join me in praying for him and the entirety of our family, as I fervently pray for each one of you, every second of every day," she wrote.
On the day of the incident, Marcee Gray received a text from Colt that read, "I'm sorry, mom," the two confirming the information with CNN. The text prompted Marcee to contact the school at 9:50 a.m., warning of an emergency situation, approximately 30 minutes before law enforcement responded to the school regarding a shooting, based on call logs and messages exchanged between Marcee and her sister, which were supplied to CNN.
This is an evolving story and will be updated accordingly.
"We're deeply affected by this tragedy, as it involved our community and our children's school," said a local resident, highlighting the impact on 'us'.
"Despite the accusations, I believe in the goodness within Colt and stand by him during this challenging time, being 'us', his family and friends," Marcee Gray emphasized.
