Municipal politics - The mayoral election in Magdeburg is not valid

The election for the chairman of the city council of Magdeburg was not conducted properly. This was announced by the State Administrative Office. During the week, there were heated discussions about the election, as reported earlier by the "Magdeburger Volksstimme".

In the constituent session of the city council after the municipal election, only one candidate, a CDU politician and former state legislator Wigbert Schwenke, appeared for the chairmanship. In the first round of voting, he fell short of the necessary majority with 48% of the votes. After some discussions and interruptions, the election was repeated by resolution of the city council members. In this repeat voting, Schwenke received the necessary majority with 57% of the votes.

Long interruptions during the session

In particular, the AfD in the city council had questioned the election result. The re-election of the election should not have been legally possible, criticized the party in a letter to the State Administrative Office. The Office now officially declares that the resolution on the election of the chairman is not valid. The municipal supervision is in contact with the mayor of the city regarding the challenge.

The city of Magdeburg stated that all other resolutions passed in the constituent session were legally valid. However, the election of the city council chairman will be considered again in the next session in August.
