The mattress, priced at 2000 euros, was rated only "satisfactory" during its product evaluation.
To ensure a good night's rest and sound health, the right bedding is crucial. Unfortunately, poor sleep hygiene often hinders this, with factors like excessive screen time, substance abuse, or mental stress contributing to the issue. Or simply due to an unsuitable bedding. Recently, a test was conducted on various mattresses to identify the best options. This test looked at five spring core and six foam mattresses, all measuring 90 x 200 cm, and priced between 160 and 2000 euros. Not a single model underperformed in this test.
The testers then pondered over what makes a good mattress. In Test's opinion, it's not the viscoelastic layer that many manufacturers are currently hyping up. While memory foam is said to conform perfectly to the body shape, the testers found no significant differences in comfort or pressure distribution between mattresses with and without this layer.
A Pricey Disappointment
The most expensive mattress in the test, costing a steep 2000 euros, is solely made with memory foam. However, it falls short of the winners, earning a mere "satisfactory" score of 2.9. Weighing over 25 kg, the "Tempur ProCool Quilt" lacks handles, making it nearly impossible to transport or turn. Test deemed it lacking in convenience.
Furthermore, it contains high levels of zinc pyrithione, a harmful substance that can potentially impact fertility, according to the European Chemicals Agency. In addition, its lying properties are mediocre.
Affordable Spring Core Mattress
When it comes to finding rest, the ever-reliable spring core mattress often comes to mind. Known for its excellent moisture transport and low heat retention, it's particularly beneficial for heavy sweaters and those who easily overheat.
Among the spring core mattresses, the "Ikea Valevåg" stood out. Priced at just 199 euros, it's the best and most affordable of the newly tested mattresses, earning a high-quality rating of 1.9. It supports all body types well in both side and back positions, and gets excellent ratings in durability, cover, and health and environment.
On the other hand, foam mattresses are typically lighter, offer good point elasticity, and are suitable for those with allergies. In this segment, the "Max Foam by Fan von f.a.n." and "Bodyguard Anti-Kartell Matratze von Bett1.de" are noteworthy. Both cost 199 euros, but the latter costs slightly more at 249 euros. The "Max Foam by Fan von f.a.n." offers the best lying properties for all body types among the newcomers, except for large, heavy individuals.
When lying down, it's important to note that side sleepers should maintain a similar depth for their shoulders and hips, avoiding excessive sinking. Back sleepers should avoid feeling as if they're lying on a hammock. Ultimately, the most crucial factor when purchasing a mattress is a thorough test lie to ensure it meets your specific requirements.
Despite the promotions of viscoelastic layers by many manufacturers, testers found no significant difference in comfort or pressure distribution between mattresses with and without this feature, emphasizing the importance of focusing on other factors that contribute to a good night's sleep, such as addressing sleeping disorders.
However, it's worth mentioning that certain mattresses may contain harmful substances, like the expensive "Tempur ProCool Quilt" with its high levels of zinc pyrithione, which can potentially impact fertility. Individuals with sleeping disorders or sensitivity to chemicals should consider this factor while choosing a mattress.
