- The leader of Brandenburg's CDU opposes coalition formation with the Left and AfD.
The Brandenburg CDU is keeping firm on its stance not to join forces with Die Linke or the Alternative for Germany (AfD) after the state votes in Saxony and Thuringia. As stated by CDU state chair Jan Redmann to the German Press Agency, "The resolution against cooperating with the AfD and Die Linke remains valid." From the brandenburg perspective, there's no compelling reason to alter this stance at present.
In the aftermath of the elections on Sunday, intricate coalition talks are anticipated in Thuringia and Saxony. In accordance with a federal party directive, the CDU is prohibited from entering into coalitions with either the AfD or Die Linke, with the exception of the BSW. In Brandenburg, a fresh state parliament will be elected on September 22.
In Saxony and Thuringia, the CDU aspires to install its own leaders as presidents. In Saxony, led by Minister President Michael Kretschmer, the Christian Democrats emerged as the most powerful force. In Thuringia, the AfD, led by Björn Höcke, a right-wing extremist recognized as such by the constitutional protection, currently holds the lead, yet lacks a potential coalition partner.
Initially, Thuringia's CDU state chair Mario Voigt declined to comment on whether a government under his leadership would receive Die Linke's support. In contrast, a coalition of CDU, BSW, and SPD would secure a majority in Saxony, whereas in Thuringia, this is not the case.
After the Brandenburg Election to the Landtag on September 22, the CDU is expected to maintain its stance against cooperation with Die Linke or the AfD. Despite the coalition talks in Thuringia and Saxony following the elections on Sunday, the CDU in Brandenburg finds no compelling reason to change its stance.
