The island of Crete has been shaken by three earthquakes
Popular holiday island Crete was shaken by an earthquake three times within half an hour this morning. So far, local media reports suggest that people were frightened but no one was injured, and there were no reported damages.
The earthquakes occurred south of the island at depths ranging between three and five kilometers below sea level, with magnitudes of 4.1, 4.8, and 4.5 felt as far as the city of Heraklion on the north coast.
The island's residents are familiar with the region's seismic activity. "It's always lively here," a seismologist told ERTNews. It's too early to say if the situation has calmed down after the three strong earthquakes, and further observation is needed.
According to statistics from the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, there have been around 1,000 earthquakes in the region of Crete this year alone. However, only about a dozen of these had a magnitude of 4 or higher. Crete lies north of a deep tectonic trench where the African and Eurasian plates meet, resulting in frequent earthquakes.
In the morning when the earthquakes hit Crete, many residents woke up suddenly due to the shaking. Despite the strong tremors, the locals remain calm and hopeful, knowing that seismic activity is common in their area.
