The German army barracks are locked down on suspicion of sabotage.
In Cologne, the lockdown of a large air force base has caused a stir. Soldiers are said to have been advised not to use drinking water. There is suspicion of sabotage. A hole found in a fence supports this suspicion.
Investigators are looking into possible irregularities at a waterworks on the Cologne-Wahn airbase in connection with a suspected crime against the Bundeswehr. The base has been locked down for this purpose. After reports of a disruption, a hole in a fence was also discovered. This initially unconfirmed suspicion was that the water supply might have been sabotaged. Water samples were also taken for examination.
According to these reports, the base could no longer be entered or exited. The police had cordoned it off. Several units are stationed in the base. Among them is the air transport wing of the Bundeswehr, responsible for the travel of cabinet members and high-ranking government officials.
The "Spiegel" reported that in internal communications, soldiers and civilian personnel were urgently advised not to use drinking water. Military engineers are inspecting the building.
The investigation into the incident at the Cologne-Wahn airbase has expanded to include the waterworks there, due to the suspected sabotage. The hole in the fence and the urgent warning about the drinking water have raised concerns about potential contamination at the Cologne airforce base.
