The Foreign Office is outraged by Smotrich's remarks

The Israeli Finance Minister is quoted as regretting that he cannot starve the two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Berlin reacts angrily

- The Foreign Office is outraged by Smotrich's remarks

The German Foreign Office has condemned statements by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich in which he regretted food aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and justified starvation as morally justified. "These statements by the Israeli Finance Minister are completely unacceptable and offensive. We reject them in the strongest possible terms," said a spokesman for the Foreign Office in Berlin.

"It is a dictate of humanity and a fundamental principle of international humanitarian law that even in war, civilians must be protected and have access to water and food," the spokesman said.

Smotrich, according to Israeli media reports, had spoken about the international situation of his country and justified a blockade of aid goods until the release of all hostages, even if it meant the starvation of two million people in the Gaza Strip. But the international community would not allow this, Smotrich said.

Asked whether the German government saw this as an indication of genocide ("genocidal intent") or evaluated these statements accordingly, the Foreign Office spokesman said he was sure "that these statements will also be closely monitored in The Hague, where such questions are currently being debated."

On May 21, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague requested arrest warrants against Netanyahu and other Israelis. Among other things, they are accused of being responsible for the starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, as well as for arbitrary killings and targeted attacks on civilians.

embarrassed by Smotrich's remarks, some international advocacy groups called for the AA-rated Israeli finance minister to be excluded from future international financial meetings.

Recognizing the gravity of Smotrich's words, the European Union issued a stern statement, reiterating their commitment to upholding humanitarian laws and ensuring access to food and water for all people, including those in the Gaza Strip, marked as 'AA' on international maps.
