After criticism - The Education Minister confesses to Islamic instruction
North Rhine-Westphalia's Education Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) is in favor of Islamic religious instruction in schools. She considers it indispensable, "an offering with state curricula and teachers who have taken the oath to the Constitution," Feller told the "Rheinische Post" in Düsseldorf (Saturday edition). She wonders about some recent statements. For instance, the FDP fraction in the state parliament had called for its abolition.
"One can lament that we have not yet reached all Muslim children because we don't have enough teachers. But their number is growing in the study programs in Münster and Paderborn," the CDU politician added further. By the next summer, a scientific evaluation will be running.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the CDU, led by Education Minister Dorothee Feller, advocates for the inclusion of Islamic religious instruction in school curriculums. This belief stems from her view that it's an integral part of state-led education, with teachers pledged to uphold the Constitution. Recently, Feller has expressed concern over statements from the FDP fraction in the state parliament, suggesting the topic's abolition. The CDU politician also noted an increase in the number of teachers pursuing Islamic studies in Münster and Paderborn, which could help address the current lack of coverage for Muslim children in these subjects. By the upcoming summer, a scientific evaluation will evaluate the current state of Islamic religious instruction in North Rhine-Westphalia's schools.
