The Dresden fire department readies for potential Elbe River flooding.
Dresden's fire department is ready for the possibility of the Elbe river flooding, which could hinder the recovery efforts after the Carolabridge partially collapsed. This is based on preliminary intel about a potential severe weather event in the eastern region, according to Michael Klahre from Dresden's fire department. "We've got our eyes on this," he said.
No specific actions have been outlined as yet, it was mentioned. The exact severity of the weather situation remains uncertain. However, a flood emergency plan is in place to be activated if needed. "We're on alert and prepared," Klahre added.
The German Weather Service (DWD) does not predict a severe weather situation for Saxony directly, but they anticipate heavy rains in central Bohemia, the Isar and Giant Mountains, as well as vast areas of Austria. This will affect the rivers in Saxony.
A meteorologist from DWD in Leipzig indicated that there might be continuous rain east of the Elbe and particularly in the Germany-Poland-Czech Republic tri-border area from Friday till Sunday. The accumulated rainfall could reach 40 to 50 liters per square meter. Yet, significantly more rain is expected in Bohemia and large portions of Austria, with up to 150 to 200 liters per square meter.
The fire department's preparedness extends beyond flood management, as they also have firefighting equipment at the ready in case of any related incidents. In light of the anticipated heavy rains, the fire department's role in evacuations and rescue operations could be instrumental.
