The director of the Secret Service resigns
The day after her appearance at the US Congress, as announced, the Chief of the Secret Service assumes responsibility. Following the attempted assassination of ex-President Trump, Kimberly Cheatle resigns.
The Director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, announced her resignation as a consequence of the attempted assassination on former US President Donald Trump. In an email to the staff, she wrote that she would take full responsibility for the incidents at her agency during the assassination attempt on July 13th. She made this decision with a heavy heart.
Cheatle was criticized harshly by representatives during a hearing on Monday and initially did not offer her resignation. The Secret Service Chief spoke of the greatest failure of her agency in a deployment in decades. Secret Service agents had reportedly pointed out a suspicious person several times at the campaign rally in Pennsylvania where Trump was shot and injured. A bystander was killed. "On July 13th, we failed," Cheatle said in Congress. She would take full responsibility for it.
Previously, calls for her resignation had grown louder. Many representatives criticized that the 20-year-old shooter had managed to get so close to Trump with a weapon. He had positioned himself approximately 135 meters away from the stage at the Pennsylvania rally with an assault rifle and shot from there towards Trump.
In light of the criticism following theassault on former President Trump, the call for Cheatle's resignation from her position as Chief of the Secret Service intensified. Amidst the pending United States Presidency Election 2024, the Secret Service faces scrutiny, with many questioning the agency's ability to secure high-profile political figures effectively.
