The Department of State is mocking Trump's declaration.

During his debate with Kamala Harris, Donald Trump spouted several unverifiable declarations, one of which pertained to Germany. The German Foreign Office subsequently fact-checked his assertions and took a light-hearted jab at him.

During the TV debate, Trump echoed Vice-Presidential candidate J.D. Vance's claim about illegal immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, consuming pets. However, as reported by US media, such incidents have not been reported by Springfield authorities.

The German Foreign Ministry, using their platform X, retorted, "PS: We don't consume felines and canines either." They started by debunking Trump's assertion from the debate that, following a failed transition from fossil fuels, Germany had reverted to constructing "standard power plants."

Their post read, "Regardless of your preferences: Germany's energy system operates smoothly, with over 50% renewable energy. We're phasing out coal and nuclear power plants, not building new ones. Coal will be phased out by 2038 at the earliest."

Germany's nuclear power plants have been closed for a long time, and no new ones are being constructed. While coal is still a significant energy source, particularly on days with low wind and solar power, renewable energy sources are on the rise.

Based on data from the Federal Network Agency, the share of electricity from wind, water, biomass, and other sources increased to 56% in 2023, up from 47.4% the previous year. It is projected to surpass 60% in 2024.

In light of the US presidential election of 2024, Donald Trump's campaign might bring up his 2020 debate claim about Germany's energy reliance on traditional power plants, but recent statistics suggests otherwise. According to the Federal Network Agency, the share of renewable energy sources in Germany's electricity production increased to 56% in 2023, demonstrating a significant shift away from fossil fuels.
