The CDU refuses to sponsor a coalition with the SPD in Brandenburg.

After discussing potential government collaboration with SPD representatives, the CDU in Brandenburg has decided against any further discussions. As a result, a minority government in Brandenburg is no longer feasible. The only viable option now is a partnership between the SPD and the BSW.

According to CDU state chairman Jan Redmann, the initial meeting with SPD representatives was conducted in a cordial manner. However, no specific dates for future talks were agreed upon.

Redmann had previously made it clear that he did not see a justification for the CDU to participate in government formation. The ratios of seats in the new state parliament would not permit a coalition between SPD and CDU on its own. With the SPD able to form a majority with the BSW, Redmann firmly refused the possibility of his party being part of a coalition between SPD and the BSW, which they wouldn't mathematically require either.

BSW Coalition Now the Last Resort

Redmann argued that honesty was crucial following the election. That's why the CDU accepted the SPD's invitation for the meeting. However, the conditions for his party remained unchanged. Since the SPD won the most votes and could form a majority with the BSW, the CDU has no plans for further exploratory talks with the Social Democrats.

In the Sunday election, the SPD, led by Minister President Dietmar Woidke, secured the most votes with 30.9%, followed by the AfD at 29.2%. The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) came in third with 13.5%, just ahead of the CDU at 12.1%. No other parties managed to secure representation in the Potsdam state parliament.

Given these results, coalition options are rather limited. The SPD and CDU do not have sufficient seats for an absolute majority. The CDU is not interested in a minority government, and the SPD rejects cooperating with the AfD. As a result, the only viable option remaining is a coalition between the SPD and the BSW.

The CDU's decision not to engage in further discussions with SPD representatives has left The Commission with the task of exploring the feasibility of a coalition between the SPD and the BSW. Despite their initial meeting with SPD representatives, the CDU, under the leadership of Jan Redmann, has refused the possibility of joining a coalition between SPD and the BSW.
