- The CDU leader is expected to shell out 8,000 euros due to an incident of driving under the influence.
Brandenburg's CDU party chief, Jan Redmann, has been slapped with a 8,000 euro fine due to his booze-fueled E-Scooter escapade. The Potsdam district court handed him a 25-day sentence, each day costing 320 euros, for reckless drunk driving. On top of that, his driving license was suspended for an extra six months.
The Brandenburg CDU confirms Redmann has agreed to pay the fine. He's not just the CDU's state parliamentary group leader but also the leading candidate for the September 22 state elections.
Back in July, police halted Redmann while he was riding an E-Scooter home in Potsdam, past midnight. He admitted to having a blood alcohol level of nearly 1.3 per mille post-ride. In Germany, a reading of 1.1 per mille or more is considered a criminal offense. Redmann later acknowledged his mistake.
Redmann is eyeing the Minister-President seat
Redmann is aiming to take over from Dietmar Woidke (SPD) as the Minister-President. However, as per a poll from early August, the CDU is lagging behind the SPD (20 percent) and the AfD (24 percent).
The incident occurred in the city of Potsdam, as mentioned in Redmann's drunk driving case. Despite being fined and facing further consequences, The Potsdam district court still handed him a prison sentence for his reckless actions.
