The biggest dog in the world is dead

For a few days, the Great Dane Kevin was considered the world's largest dog. Now the record-breaking male dog died unexpectedly at the age of three. His owner sends a heart-warming message.

World record: Great Dane Kevin measured 93 centimeters from his paws to his withers at the neck - but he was still allowed to sit on his owner Tracy Wolf's lap in Iowa.

Guinness World Records - The biggest dog in the world is dead

Our entire family is devastated over Kevin. He was simply the best Great Dane, says Tracey Wolfe. She is the owner of Kevin, the largest male Dogue de Bordeaux in the world. This title was held by Kevin for only a few days, as Guinness World Records announced: "The three-year-old German Dogue, who lived with his loving family in West Des Moines, Iowa, USA, passed away this week after an unexpected operation, following his illness."

The grief is, like Kevin himself, enormous. He stood at a height of whole 2.13 meters. However, he received his record for another measurement: his height from paws to withers at the neck was 93 centimeters. No dog in the world was officially recorded to be taller. For comparison: A typical German Dogue reaches a withers height of around 76 centimeters.

Tracy's description of Kevin as "a big baby"

Kevin's owner Tracy Wolfe works in a veterinary clinic. She described Kevin most recently in a Guinness World Records article as "a big baby." He often behaved as if he didn't realize how big he was. "He constantly tries to squeeze himself into small beds, sit on us, and do everything that smaller dogs do." Kevin was the epitome of a gentle giant, gushes Wolfe in the article. "He's actually afraid of most things. For example, the vacuum cleaner. He doesn't even come within three meters of it! He jumps and runs away to get away from it."

Even amidst all the sorrow, Wolfe feels gratitude. Guinness World Records told Wolfe she was "so happy that he managed to break the record and draw attention to himself." Kevin enjoyed the attention absolutely. "I wish these giant breeds and all dogs could live longer. There's never enough time."

Half a year ago, Zeus had passed away, the previous record holder, an American Dogue. He was also three years old and died of a lung infection. Zeus measured 1.046 meters in height. The largest dog ever officially measured was another one: Giant George in 2010, with a size of 1.09 meters.

  1. Tracey Wolfe, the owner of the world's largest male Dogue de Bordeaux, Kevin, worked in a veterinary clinic in West Des Moines, Iowa, USA.
  2. Despite his enormous size, Kevin was known as a "big baby," often trying to fit into small spaces and emulating smaller dogs' behaviors, as described by Tracy Wolfe in a Guinness World Records article.
  3. Guinness World Records recognized Kevin's height from paws to withers at the neck of 93 centimeters, making him the tallest dog in the world, though he had briefly held the title of the world's tallest male Dogue de Bordeaux.
  4. Despite the sadness surrounding Kevin's unexpected passing, Tracy Wolfe expressed gratitude that he had broken the record and garnered attention for his breed, as Guinness World Records had informed her.
