The Administrative Authority of the Nation ink an additional pact concerning immigration with Kenya.
The administration in power has penned a migration deal with Kenya. This deal was sealed during Kenyan President William Ruto's trip to Berlin, with Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), Green Party's State Minister in the Foreign Office Katja Keul, and Kenya's Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi signing it on a Friday. The aim is to streamline the recruitment of skilled workers from Kenya while easing the reentry of unauthorized migrants.
Germany has previously inked migration accords with India (December 2022) and Georgia (December 2023). Another one is on the horizon during Chancellor Olaf Scholz's (SPD) visit to Uzbekistan at the beginning of the next week. Negotiations for similar agreements are ongoing with Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and the Philippines. Preliminary discussions for enhanced cooperation have taken place with Morocco, Colombia, and Ghana, although a comprehensive deal has yet to materialize.
As for returning unauthorized migrants, Germany's reliance on Kenya is relatively minimal. Only 225 individuals from Kenya filed their initial asylum applications in the first eight months. The approval rate, however, is abysmal: Just one person was granted asylum, while ten others were granted refugee status from January to August.
The migration agreements with Kenya, sealed by German officials, are part of a larger strategy to establish such deals with various countries. Negotiations for similar agreements are underway with Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and the Philippines, indicating a broader global approach to migration management.
