Tens of thousands call for ceasefire in the Middle East

The fighting between Israel and Hamas has been going on for around seven weeks. At the same time, protests are taking place around the world. At the latest demonstrations in Canada and the UK, numerous protesters are calling for a "complete ceasefire".

In Great Britain and Canada, numerous people demonstrated on Saturday for a permanent ceasefire in the war between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas. In London, tens of thousands marched through the city center to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. "The occupation must end. We need a complete ceasefire, not a four-day truce," said 24-year-old Alaa Hassan. In the Canadian capital Ottawa, thousands also demonstrated in front of parliament, waving Palestinian flags.

"A pause is not enough," said Jara Shufani, one of the organizers of the protest in Ottawa. "Thousands of Palestinians have been killed and Gaza's infrastructure has been destroyed." The Canadian demonstration was peaceful and there were no reports of violence from London for the time being. Around 1500 police officers were deployed in the British capital for the protest, including 500 who were called to London from other parts of the country.

Israel and Hamas agreed on a four-day ceasefire on Wednesday after lengthy negotiations mediated by Qatar, the USA and Egypt. Among other things, the agreement provides for the release of a total of 50 Israeli hostages and 150 Palestinian prisoners.

Many dead

The war between Israel and Hamas has now been going on for around seven weeks. On 7 October, hundreds of fighters from Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA and the EU, invaded Israel and committed atrocities, mainly against civilians, including many women and children. According to the Israeli government, around 1,200 people were killed and around 240 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.

In response, Israel began attacking targets in the Gaza Strip on a massive scale from the air and from the ground. According to Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, more than 14,800 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since then.

In light of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, people in London joined tens of thousands in protests, urging for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas, whom they demand to end the occupation. Meanwhile, in Ottawa, Canada, organizers like Jara Shufani and thousands of protesters echoed similar calls, expressing their concern over the loss of lives and destruction in the Gaza Strip, expressing that a temporary ceasefire is not enough.
