Teheran and Moscow are conducting naval maneuvers
Iran and Russia have cooperated militarily for years. This will not change under the new Iranian president. The close cooperation between the two countries will be demonstrated with a joint military exercise in the Caspian Sea.
Iran and Russia confirm their strategic cooperation with a joint military exercise in the Caspian Sea. The program for the two naval units includes tactical exercises, rescue operations, and procedures against pirates, according to a spokesperson for the Iranian Navy, reported by the news agency ISNA.
According to the spokesperson, warships from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard will also be involved. There was no information in the report about how long the exercises will last. Iran and Russia have pursued close cooperation for years, which the new Iranian president Massud Peseschkian also intends to continue. Both countries support the rulers in the Syrian civil war, Baschar al-Assad.
Iran is also reported to have supplied Russia with drones and, according to a media report, also drones equipped with glide bombs. These were used in the Ukraine conflict. Tehran has confirmed the military cooperation with Russia but repeatedly denied any cooperation in the Ukraine conflict.
Iran's political and economic cooperation with Russia is criticized domestically. Russian President Vladimir Putin is an unreliable partner, and the country should not endanger its relations with the West because of him, according to critics. Peseschkian, who was newly elected, wants to improve relations with the West but not at the expense of those with Moscow.
- Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, has been a key supporter of Baschar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war, aligning Russia's politics with Iran's, as both countries have maintained a close alliance for years.
- Despite domestic criticism, the new Iranian president, Massud Peseschkian, has pledged to continue Iran's close military cooperation with Russia, including participating in the joint military exercises in the Caspian Sea.
- Russia and Iran's military cooperation extends beyond the Caspian Sea; reports suggest that Iran has supplied Russia with drones, some equipped with glide bombs, which were used in the Ukraine conflict, although Teheran denies any involvement in the Ukraine conflict itself.
