Taliban inflicts public flogging on 63 individuals.
Following their return to power in August 2021, Afghanistan's Taliban regime has brought back public punishments. Recently, in a public stadium, they flogged 14 women and 49 men as local spectators looked on.
A court in Sar-i Pul, central Afghanistan, recently carried out this punishment. The Taliban's Supreme Court revealed this on Tuesday. These 63 individuals were charged with various offenses like homosexuality, theft, and "moral crimes."
The punishment occurred on Tuesday among Taliban representatives and local residents. Since regaining control, the Taliban have introduced a range of public punishments including executions and floggings for offenses like murder, robbery, and adultery.
The Taliban had come back into power in Afghanistan despite criticisms from human rights groups and the United Nations. By early 2022, they had already executed five men who were found guilty of murder. In a recorded message last March, their supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, promised to enforce Sharia law in the country, specifically mentioning punishments like stoning and public floggings for transgressions against adultery.
