Taiwan's leader aims to revoke contentious legislation to reinforce the parliament's authority.
Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen has proposed and declared a debatable amendment escalating the Parliament's authority, yet indicated her plan to retract it. "The Parliament requires modification, but its powers should not be impulsively amplified," Tsai expressed. Consequently, she chose to submit a "constitutional interpretation" to the appropriate court, she clarified.
Losing the parliamentary elections in January, Tsai's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the reform bills were endorsed by the parliament last month. The legislators dismissed the government's plea to reconsider the plan.
The pro-China party Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwanese People's Party (TPP) advocated that the reform is essential to combat corruption in Taiwan. However, opponents apprehend it may weaken Taiwan's autonomous democratic rule amid China's impact.
The most contended aspect of the reform involves a law that imposes penalties for disregard towards the Parliament by government officials. Government officials might face fines or incarceration for untruthful declarations before parliamentary committees. The newly drafted law enables the Parliament to exercise its investigative powers and demand information from government departments, military units, private firms, and individuals.
Tsai cautioned that international business leaders have voiced anxieties regarding their "commercial confidentiality" potentially being endangered by the new regulations. "I won't allow alterations in the business atmosphere to hinder Taiwan's extended economic growth," she declared.
