Taiwan again spots 37 Chinese military aircraft
China considers Taiwan as part of its own territorial territory and aspires for reunification - if necessary, with military force. Taipei reports the intrusion of dozens of Chinese military aircraft into the airspace of the island state. The Taiwanese military responded.
Taiwan claims that it spotted 37 Chinese military aircraft near the island this morning. Among them were fighter jets and drones, according to the Taiwanese Defense Ministry. Thirty-six of them had crossed the median line between Taiwan and Mainland China. The Chinese aircraft were reportedly on their way to the Western Pacific for joint naval and air exercises with the aircraft carrier "Shandong".
The ministry added that the Taiwanese military monitored the situation and "deployed aircraft, ships, and coastal missile systems." Taiwan seceded from Mainland China at the end of the Civil War and after the takeover of power by the Communists in Beijing 75 years ago. Beijing views the island as a renegade province that should be reunified with the mainland - if necessary, with military force.
Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen met with the Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Raymond Green, meanwhile. The Institute is a de facto embassy of the United States. Tsai emphasized the "solid partnership (...) amidst China's repeated provocations." The United States officially recognizes China but is Taiwan's most important partner and a significant weapons supplier.
Beijing expressed concern over this cooperation and has repeatedly called on Washington to stop arming the island. Green countered that the United States would continue to "support Taiwan's ability to defend itself."
