Swing Summer Continues

The week starts off summery with temperatures over 30 degrees. However, from Wednesday onwards, there will be heavy thunderstorms in many places. But these won't last long, as it will be sunny again in many places the next day.

The meteorological summer of 2024 is now slowly approaching its final weeks, but stable summer weather is not in sight for the coming week. At least, just like last week, there's a great start with a friendly Monday and a often sunny and up to 32 degrees hot Tuesday. We won't reach the previous year's peak of 36.0 degrees in Lörrach from last Tuesday. According to current forecasts, this record might not be broken by the end of August.

We have to go back quite a few years to find a similar summer without extreme heat peaks. It's been twenty years since the annual high remained below 36 degrees: in 2004, it was a maximum of 34.5 degrees. For comparison, in 2019, we had 41.2 degrees in Duisburg and Tonisvorst.

And just like last week, heavy thunderstorms are expected to move in from the west on Wednesday, spreading eastward throughout the day. Unlike last week, there will be rapid improvement in the weather on Thursday. Friday and Saturday look sunny for the center and south, with only the north being affected by scattered showers. Temperatures will range from 25 to 30 degrees in the center and south, and 20 to 24 degrees in the north. Sunday is uncertain, with possible thunderstorms from the west; however, this is still very uncertain.

Monday: High Pressure Kai

High Pressure Kai will settle over Germany on Monday, bringing improved weather. This will also cause the last showers in the Alps to dissipate quickly. In other regions, it will be friendly from the start with a mix of sun and clouds, and the risk of showers will be low. Highest temperatures in the south and west will be 24 to 28 degrees, and in the north and east, 21 to 24 degrees.

Tuesday: Best Day of the Week

With 11 to 14 hours of sunshine, temperatures will rise to 27 to 32 degrees, with the hottest temperatures along the Rhine and the most pleasant temperatures at the coast around 25 degrees.

Wednesday: Heavy Thunderstorms and Severe Weather from the West

In the east, it will be sunny at first. However, strong thunderstorms will move in from the west in the morning, spreading eastward throughout the day. These thunderstorms could bring severe weather with storm gusts, hail, and heavy rain. Highest temperatures will range from 24 degrees in the west to 31 degrees in the east.

Thursday: Quick Weather Improvement

There will still be isolated showers at the coast and in the Alps; in other regions, it will be friendly, mostly sunny, and dry. Temperatures will reach 22 to 25 degrees in the north and 25 to 28 degrees in the south.

Friday and Saturday: Advantage South

In the south, the sun will shine, and temperatures will climb to 27 to 32 degrees. In the center, there will be some cloud fields, but it will remain dry with temperatures around 25 degrees. In the north, clouds will be more numerous, bringing occasional rain showers. Strong winds will blow at 20 to 24 degrees.

Sunday: Big Question Mark

The models haven't decided yet whether it will continue with mostly sunny, high-summer temperatures or with new heavy thunderstorms and severe weather. It remains to be seen.

Despite the approaching end of the meteorological summer, the week ahead is anticipated to be disappointing for those seeking consistent summer weather. However, Monday and Tuesday are expected to offer a pleasant start to the week, with temperatures reaching up to 32 degrees, reminiscent of summer holidays.
