Suspected Syrian war criminals arrested

Five men have been arrested in Germany by the Federal Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of committing numerous serious crimes against civilians on behalf of Syrian leader Assad.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office has arrested five alleged Syrian war criminals in Germany. They are accused of participating in the killing and attempted killing of civilians on behalf of the Syrian government led by Bashar al-Assad, as the investigative authority in Karlsruhe announced.

In 2012, the arrested men were allegedly involved in the violent suppression of a demonstration in which at least six people were killed. Among those arrested in various locations in Germany are the stateless Syrian Palestinians Jihad A., Mahmoud A., Sameer S., and Wael S., as well as the Syrian national Mazhar J.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office accuses all five suspects of murder and attempted murder as crimes against humanity and war crimes. Four suspects are also accused of torture, and one of them faces a serious charge of kidnapping resulting in death and war crimes against property.

Four of the men are accused of being part of an armed militia acting on behalf of the Syrian government in the Syrian civil war. One of the suspects is accused of being a member of the Syrian intelligence service. During the violent suppression of the demonstration, the suspects are alleged to have shot at demonstrators together with other accomplices.

The arrested individuals are internationally sought after war criminals, wanted for committing war crimes in Syria under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad. Their alleged crimes include murder, attempted murder, torture, and even kidnapping resulting in death, all classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The investigation into these war crimes is being conducted in Karlsruhe, Germany. The police have apprehended Karlsruhe-based suspects, including Syrian national Mazhar J., who is accused of being a member of the Syrian intelligence service.
