- Suspected of sabotage in the air force barracks of Cologne-Mania
Investigators are looking into anomalies at a waterworks on the Cologne-Wahn airbase due to suspicion of a crime against the German Armed Forces**. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense confirmed on Wednesday that the barracks had been closed for investigations "because there is suspicion of an attempted or completed illegal intrusion". They said: "The suspicion of sabotage also exists."
In addition to the police and military police, the Military Security Service (MAD) and the State Protection were also involved in the investigations. The ministry referred to the investigative authorities for further details.
Water samples are being examined
Following indications of a disruption, a hole in a fence was discovered, and a suspicious person was noticed, according to information from the German Press Agency. This initially unconfirmed suspicion arose that the water supply might have been sabotaged. Water samples were also taken for examination. It remained unconfirmed whether soldiers had complained of nausea.
"Last night, there was an incident at the barracks behind us. This incident led to the barracks being closed since then," said Colonel Ulrich Fonrobert, speaking on behalf of the Bundeswehr in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Bundeswehr is taking this incident very seriously.
Air Force base sealed off for hours
The Territorial Command of the Bundeswehr (TFK) states: "We wish a speedy and full recovery to any Bundeswehr members who may have been affected by this incident." Due to ongoing investigations, no further details can be provided at this time.
The barracks could not be entered or exited for hours but was expected to reopen on Wednesday, according to Bundeswehr statements. Several units are stationed at the barracks, including the Air Force's Air Transport Wing, responsible for travel by cabinet members and high-ranking government officials.
The possible background of the incident was initially unknown to the public. The Ministry of Defense did not provide details on a political connection. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the overall security situation has been reassessed. Security experts have repeatedly warned that military infrastructure could also be targets of espionage or sabotage attempts.
The Military Security Service (MAD) is actively involved in the investigations, as there's a suspicion of an attempted or completed illegal intrusion at the waterworks. The water samples being examined could provide crucial evidence in determining if sabotage has occurred.
