Suspected IS member arrested in Saxony
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has arrested a suspected member of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
According to the Karlsruhe authorities, the Iraqi was remanded in custody for suspected membership of a terrorist organization abroad. Officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office arrested him on Monday in Freiberg in Saxony.
He is said to have joined IS in Iraq in the fall of 2013. According to the investigations by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, he is said to have subsequently worked as a fighter for the organization. He is also alleged to have worked in the security department of the IS administration in northern Iraq between fall 2016 and spring 2017.
The arrest of the suspected IS member in Saxony is a significant development in the fight against global terrorism, particularly against organizations like the Islamic State (IS) and its affiliates.
