Survey shows Nigel Farage's Reform UK party surpassing Sunak's Conservatives in popularity.
In Britain, the right-wing Reform UK Party, spearheaded by Brexit advocate Nigel Farage, has surpassed the Conservative Party under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a recent poll by YouGov for the "Times" newspaper. Reform UK now has 19% support, while the Conservatives have 18%. The Labour Party is in the lead with 37% backing. The elections are slated for July 4. Contrary to this poll, other surveys show the Conservatives leading Reform UK.
This development is potentially worrisome for Sunak, who is trying to court voters with tax relief before the election. However, a series of unfavorable economic news might dampen his prospects. The unemployment rate for February to April has risen to 4.4%, the highest since summer 2021. The number of employed individuals has dropped by 207,000 since the end of 2023, and the number of unemployed has risen by 190,000. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was also stagnant in April, the same as in March, where it had shown a growth of 0.4%.
