Stuffing, tearing, celebrating: hot dog eating contest ends with a new world record

Spectacle in New York - Stuffing, tearing, celebrating: hot dog eating contest ends with a new world record

It's not nice, but still fun: The traditional Hotdog-eating contest in New York attracted thousands of spectators once again this year. The international competition, which has been held annually at Nathan's Famous, a traditional hot-dog chain, since 1916 on American Independence Day, gave fans a new winner among men for the first time since 2016.

Bertoletti secures winner title with 58 hotdogs in 10 minutes

In the absence of eating legend Joey Chestnut, US-American Patrick Bertoletti secured the mustard-yellow winner's belt after a close race. The 39-year-old consumed 58 buns with sausages in ten minutes, five hotdogs more than second-placed Geoffrey Esper. The third place was taken by the Australian James Webb, who squeezed in 52 sausages.

"I didn't want to stop eating until the job was done," commented Bertoletti on his first top spot in his career as a competitive eater.

Chestnut, the perennial men's champion, was actually supposed to participate in the contest at Coney Island in southern New York since 2016. His own world record stands at 76 hot dogs – nearly eight per minute. However, the 40-year-old could not attend this year. The reason: Chestnut had made a deal with Nathan's Famous' rival Impossible Foods, which also produces vegan sausages and burgers.

Sudo sets new world record

Meanwhile, there was a new world record at the women's contest: Title defender Miki Sudo stuffed 51 sausage buns into herself and broke her own record from the previous year by 11.5 hotdogs. "Breaking the 50-pound mark is a milestone for all women, and I'm very happy to be a part of it," Sudo told the "New York Post" after receiving her 10th pink belt.

Sudo went into the contest as a favorite among women. Since 2014, the 38-year-old had won every contest – with the exception of 2021, when she declined to participate because she was pregnant.

In New York, Miki Sudo set a new world record in the women's Hotdog-eating contest, consuming 51 buns with sausages, surpassing her previous year's mark by 11.5 hotdogs. This achievement made her the first woman to break the 50-pound mark in the competition.

The annual Hotdog-eating contest in New York, including the Women's division, is a significant event that often falls on a National holiday in the United States.
