Study Indicates High Number of Germans At Risk of Sunburn
While disregarding the potential dangers of UV radiation exposure, a substantial number of individuals in Germany disregard sun safety measures. As per a survey conducted by Forsa for the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), approximately half of the participants reported experiencing sunburn in the previous year, with 80% of those aged between 18-34 admitting to it.
Although seven out of ten participants acknowledge the significance of UV protection, only 4% actually make a conscious effort to protect themselves during outdoor activities such as sports, festivals, walking, or gardening. BfS President Inge Paulini elaborated that sun protection is often viewed as a requirement only for vacations. At public outdoor events, merely 42% of attendees practice sun protection measures.
Paulini stressed that every sunburn should be avoided, especially for children. Sunburns during childhood and adolescence significantly increase the risk of developing melanoma, a type of black skin cancer, later in life.
A vast majority of participants expressed a desire for UV protection measures to be implemented at major sports events such as the upcoming European Football Championship. Roughly 78% seek shaded areas, while nearly 40% desire UV intensity warning signs, announcements, or access to free sunscreen.
A mere 13% of participants believe there is no need for sun protection measures at large sports events. In April 2024, Forsa interviewed over 2000 individuals aged 18 and above.
UV radiation is a primary cause of skin cancer. The incidence of skin cancer diagnoses has been on the rise in recent years. Apart from sunscreen, it is crucial to limit UV radiation exposure, seek shade, and employ protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses. During the Men's Football European Championship in Germany, the BfS will offer free sunscreen and information about current UV radiation levels in all ten host cities.
