- Strong earthquake shakes southwestern Japan

A powerful earthquake shook southwestern Japan. Following a corresponding warning from the Meteorological Agency, tsunami waves up to one meter high were recorded along the coast of the southwestern main island of Kyushu. There were no initial reports of casualties or major damage. Moreover, no irregularities were found in nuclear power plants in the region due to the 7.1 magnitude tremors, according to Japanese media. The earthquake occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture. In stores, goods fell off the shelves, as shown on TV. High-speed train services were disrupted by the tremors. Japan, an island nation, is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

The Japanese authorities issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake. Many Japanese residents rushed to higher ground due to the threat of tsunami waves.
