Strack-Zimmermann: "Guterres is unsuitable for his office"
FDP defence politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has sharply criticized UN Secretary-General António Guterres for statements on the war in the Middle East.
"The battle for a new world order is in full swing in the worst sense of the word. Instead of doing his job, UN Secretary-General Guterres is talking the talk of the anti-democrats, concealing the horrors of the wars in Ukraine and Syria and equating the attacks on these two countries, which violate international law, with Israel's legitimate right to self-defense," Strack-Zimmermann, Chairwoman of the Bundestag's Defence Committee, told the German Press Agency in Berlin. She stated: "Guterres is unsuitable for his office."
Guterres had repeatedly drawn harsh criticism from Israel for his statements. Most recently, he declared that the killing of civilians during the Israeli military's combat operations in the Gaza Strip was unprecedented during his term of office. He has repeatedly strongly condemned the Hamas terror attack against Israel on October 7.
- Despite the criticism from Israel, UN Secretary-General António Guterres continues to face harsh criticism from FDP defense politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann due to his remarks on the war in the Middle East.
- Strack-Zimmermann believes that Guterres is not fit for his role as UN Secretary-General, as she accused him of concealing the horrors of wars and equating legitimate self-defense with violations of international law.
- The UN, under the leadership of Guterres, has been involved in trying to resolve conflicts worldwide, including the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Syria, but Strack-Zimmermann's words suggest that there might be internal disagreements about its approach.
