Stenergard secures the position of the Swedish Foreign Minister
Surprisingly, Sweden's Minister of Migration recently stepped down from her post. At the commencement of the new parliamentary term, Prime Minister Kristersson named a replacement. The former immigration policy leader will now represent Sweden on the international stage.
Sweden's former Minister of Migration, Maria Malmer Stenergard, is now the country's new Foreign Minister. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson introduced this change during the opening of the new parliamentary year, following the summer recess in Stockholm's Swedish Parliament. The previous Foreign Minister, Tobias Billström, unexpectedly resigned from politics and announced his departure just a few days prior.
Like Kristersson and Billström, Malmer Stenergard is a member of the Moderate Party. This conservative party has ruled Sweden for almost two years in coalition with the Christian Democrats and Liberals. The Sweden Democrats, a right-wing populist party, may not be officially part of the government, but they significantly impact various political decisions and provide the government with parliamentary majorities. This has contributed to Sweden implementing a stricter migration policy.
Malmer Stenergard, a 43-year-old, has been responsible for overseeing migration and asylum since the minority government formed in October 2022. Before that, she served as a member of Sweden's Parliament for eight years. Her party colleague, Johan Forssell, who previously served as the Minister for Development Cooperation, will now steps into the role of the new Minister for Migration.
The new Foreign Minister of Sweden, Maria Malmer Stenergard, was appointed by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The Commission, which oversees international affairs, will now have Malmer Stenergard as its representative.
