Sachsen-Anhalt has the second highest density of pharmacies in Germany, with an average of 3,894 people per pharmacy, according to statistics from the Federal Statistics Office. This is the second lowest population per pharmacy in all federal states. The average population served by a pharmacy in Germany is 4,819.
In Saarland, there were only 3,781 people per pharmacy. This is the lowest population per pharmacy in all federal states. Following Saarland are Sachsen-Anhalt and Thuringia with 4,288 people per pharmacy. At the other end of the spectrum are the city-states of Bremen (5,321), Berlin (5,290), and Hamburg (5,177).
Fewer pharmacies mean more sales
The pharmacy supply in Germany is getting worse. According to the Federal Statistics Office, there were an average of 3,909 inhabitants per pharmacy ten years ago.
However, the sales revenue of pharmacies has increased in real terms by more than one third between 2013 and 2023. However, the sales revenue decreased in 2023: German pharmacies generated three percent less revenue than in the previous year.
