Better school education - State parliament debates school education in MV

The teacher shortage and mediocre results in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are topics in the Landtag today (10:00 am). In the Current Hour, the CDU is discussing on a proposal by Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) to reform teacher education at the Universities in Rostock and Greifswald.

The Minister intends to merge the study programs for teachers at regional schools and gymnasiums. The opposition CDU criticizes this fiercely and suspects that the red-red state government may intend to abolish the gymnasium in the following. "For better education in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – Against uniform teachers, uniform schools, uniform porridge" is the title of the Current Hour, which marks the beginning of the three-day Landtag session. Many young teachers prefer to go to the gymnasiums or regional schools less. The shortage is greater there.

On the same day, the Landtag is scheduled to vote on a draft law from Education Minister Simone Oldenburg (Left) which aims to improve the situation for lateral entrants and also targets the second part of teacher training, the Referendariat. In the future, it should be possible to shorten the Referendariat from the current 18 months to a maximum of 12 months if the concerned individuals have previously worked as substitute teachers. Critics see the quality of the training at risk, as substitute teaching is not supervised by mentors and evaluated with the trainee teachers.

  1. The teacher shortage in regional schools and gymnasiums in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a significant concern for the SPD's Education Minister Bettina Martin.
  2. The CDU in the Parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern strongly opposes the SPD's proposal to merge teacher education programs at universities in Schwerin, Rostock, and Greifswald.
  3. The CDU fears that the proposed changes by the red-red state government could result in the abolition of gymnasiums in the future, as suggested by their title, "For better education in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – Against uniform teachers, uniform schools, uniform porridge."
  4. The opposition CDU also criticizes a draft law by the Left's Education Minister Simone Oldenburg, which aims to improve the situation for lateral entrants and shorten the Referendariat period from 18 months to a maximum of 12 months.
  5. Critics argue that allowing teachers to shorten their Referendariat period to 12 months, based on previous substitute teaching experience, could negatively impact the quality of the training without proper supervision and evaluation.
  6. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Landtag will vote on both the SPD and the Left's proposals to address the teacher shortage and improve school education in cities like Rostock and Greifswald before the end of the current three-day session.
