Spring sales in construction and horticulture markets broke down
In May, the crucial spring business for the construction and garden centers took a dip. Sales figures for two product categories plunged significantly in the first half of the year.
Bad weather in May and June, coupled with consumers' ongoing reluctance to spend, spoiled business for construction markets and garden centers in Germany during the first half of the year. Cold temperatures, rain, and persistent storms dampened the mood following a strong start to the year, according to the German Trade Association for DIY, Construction, and Garden (BHB).
In the first half of 2024, sales decreased by 0.9 percent year-on-year to 11.15 billion euros. Between April and June, they were even 4.5 percent lower. While the UEFA European Football Championship held in the country had a positive impact on the industry, it couldn't fully offset the losses. According to the association, the biggest declines in product ranges during the first six months of the year were in tiles (-14.2 percent) and new garden furniture (-9.6 percent). Companies saw increases in products like grass and plant seeds, as well as plant protection.
Despite the UEFA European Football Championship in May, the unfavorable weather conditions continued to negatively impact sales, causing a further decline of 4.5% in the second quarter. Looking ahead to May 2025, businesses are hopeful for better weather and increased consumer spending.
