US election campaign - Speaker: Biden's withdrawal has no health reasons

Joe Biden's withdrawal from the Presidential race, according to his spokeswoman, has nothing to do with his health. "It's not about his health. I can tell you: No, that's not the reason," Karine Jean-Pierre said during the regular press conference at the White House.

She refused to make specific comments on what exactly motivated Biden for his decision. Regarding the question if he was presented with polls, she did not answer. Jean-Pierre emphasized that Biden would explain his reasons in a speech to the nation on Wednesday evening (local time/German night to Thursday).

Biden announced his withdrawal on Sunday in a letter that he published on social media. This was an unusual step. At that time, Biden was in isolation at his private home in Rehoboth Beach due to a Coronavirus infection.

Biden consulted with advisors before making the decision

Jean-Pierre now stated that Biden had consulted with a small group of advisors and his family on Saturday evening. "He made the decision on Sunday afternoon," the spokeswoman said. Shortly before the publication of the letter, he had still spoken with some advisors and staff members on the phone.

Biden had previously come under heavy pressure within his party. After his TV debate debacle against the Republican challenger Donald Trump, doubts arose as to whether Biden was mentally fit enough and therefore suitable as a Presidential candidate.
