SPD chairwoman Esken wants to run for the Bundestag again
SPD Chair Saskia Esken intends to run for the Bundestag again in 2025. The German Press Agency received confirmation of her intentions from the Willy-Brandt House on Thursday. Previously, the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" had reported this.
Before the latest Bundestag election, Esken told the newspaper in October 2020 that she was running for the Bundestag again - "but then I'm out." The fact that the SPD Chair is now seeking another legislative term in 2025 caused criticism in her constituency Calw, Baden-Württemberg: Manfred Stehle, according to the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" a member of the SPD Calw district association, spoke out in the newspaper about a "clear breach of promise." Esken is not only damaging her personal credibility with this but also the SPD, for which she bears a special responsibility as Co-Chair.
The SPD politician has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013. In 2021, she entered parliament as the top candidate of her party in Baden-Württemberg via the state list - the direct mandate in her constituency went to the CDU politician Klaus Mack.
Despite her previous statement in October 2020 that she would only serve one more term in the Bundestag, SPD Chair Saskia Esken has faced criticism for her decision to run again in 2025. This shift in plans has sparked discontent in her constituency Calw, Baden-Württemberg, with SPD member Manfred Stehle voicing concerns about a "clear breach of promise." The potential damage to Esken's personal credibility and the SPD's standing as a result of this decision has been a topic of discussion.
